The Giver: A Preview

Tomorrow we will begin reading The Giver.  To prepare for the reading, I'd like for you to read a few summaries of the book from a website called Booktalks: Quick & Simple.  You'll find a link to it on the left side of this page under Reading. Here are the questions I'd like you to answer:

What genre do you think the book is?

Who is the main character?

What is the problem of the book?

What themes might the book touch on?

I'd also like you to answer some questions about the book's author, Lowis Lowry. Here they are:

What are some of the other books she has written?

Where did she get the inspiration to write The Giver?

Click here to read about Lowis Lowry. Please write your answers to these questions by clicking on the COMMENTS link under this post.  You should write in full sentences.  Do not copy somebody else's answers--I will be asking these same questions tomorrow to make sure you have done the reading.

The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, Assignment #1

For each of the assignments below, please click on the comments link under this entry and type your answers there.  Please write them as full sentences.

Researching the Book's Setting

This story takes place during World War II, one of the most important events of the 20th Century.  In order to understand the book a little better, it is important to know a few facts about the war.  Below is a link to a website with timelines for each year of the war.  Click on the link and browse the timelines for each year.  Look for answers to these questions:

In what year did the war begin?  In what year did the war end?

Which countries were involved in the war?

Where did the fighting take place?

History: The Air Raids

Now that you know a little about WWII, it's time to learn a little about what was happening in England, the setting of The Lion, the Wich, and the Wardrobe.  During this time, many children were evacuated from certain cities in England considered to be in danger of bombing.  Click on the link below and look for answers to these questions:

Who were children sent to live with when they were evacuated?

How many children were evacuated in the first few weeks of the war?
