Summary part 3

The Amazon rain forest is being destroyed, but concerned people are trying to save it. In the 1960s, the Brazilian government told the poor people to live in the rainforest. This brought roads, loggers, and sawmills to the rainforest. More people began to be concerned about the loss of the rain forest. Soon after, gold was discovered in the Amazon. This made thousands of people come in to get gold. In 1991, Brazil saved 36,000 square miles of the land for the Yahnomami, the natives to the land. In the year 2004, almost 10,000 square miles were cut down. Some experts estimate that in the last few years, more than twenty percent of the Amazon was cut down. Since soy farming has become more popular, more people are building roads and clearing the Amazon to find soy. Working with the WWF and the ARPA, Brazil is trying to save the Amazon. They are preserving at least twelve percent of the rain forest now, which is about the size of California.
